Central Debate: A Proud Tradition
Starting with the Lincoln-Douglas Debating Society founded in 1904 by teacher A. H. Schubert, debate is perhaps the oldest student organization and interscholastic team in La Crosse education. Here is a partial (for now) look at the history of debate at Central High School as told in the pages of Central's yearbook, The Booster, and the La Crosse Tribune.

From the August 3rd, 1911 La Crosse Tribune. The Lincoln-Douglas Debating Society is the oldest organization at the La Crosse High School, founded in 1904. The founding coach is A. H. Schubert.

From the December 21st, 1906 La Crosse Tribune, the first recorded interscholastic competition for the La Crosse High School's Lincoln-Douglas Debating Society versus students from Sparta High School.

From the June 6th, 1908 La Crosse Tribune. Paul Esch, son of a Wisconsin congressman, won La Crosse High School's first ever state debate championship. Sadly, Paul would pass away three years later when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
